Definition Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is the process by which an affiliate earns a commission for marketing other people’s products or companies.
Affiliates simply search for a product they like, then promote that product and profit from every sale they make.
Sales are tracked (tracking) via an affiliate link from one website to another.
How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?
Because affiliate marketing works by spreading the responsibility of product marketing and creation on all sides, affiliate marketing has succeeded in enhancing the abilities of various individuals for more effective marketing strategies while providing contributors with a share of the profits.
To make this work, it has to involve three different parties:
- Seller and product maker.
- Affiliates or advertisers
1. Seller and product maker.
A seller, whether a single entrepreneur or a large company, is a seller, trader, product creator, or retailer with the product being marketed.
Products can be physical objects, such as household items, or services, such as makeup tutorials.
Also known as brands, sellers do not need to be actively involved in marketing, but they can also become advertisers and benefit from the revenue sharing associated with affiliate marketing
2. Affiliates or publishers.
Also known as a publisher, affiliates can be individuals or companies that market a seller’s product in a way that is attractive to potential consumers.
In other words, affiliates promote products to convince consumers that the products are valuable or useful to them and convince them to buy them.
If the consumer ends up buying a product, the affiliate receives a portion of the generated revenue.
Affiliates often have a very specific audience to who they are marketing to, generally following that audience’s interests.
It creates a defined niche or personal brand that helps affiliates attract consumers who are most likely to act on promotions.
Whether consumers know it or not, they (and their purchases) are the drivers of affiliate marketing. Affiliates share this product with them on social media, blogs and websites.
When consumers buy products, the sellers and affiliates share the profits.
Sometimes affiliates will choose to upfront to the consumer that they receive a commission for the sales they make.
On the other hand, consumers may be completely unaware of the affiliate marketing infrastructure behind their purchases.
In other words, they will rarely pay more for products purchased through affiliate marketing; part of the profit from the affiliate is included in the retail price.
Consumers will complete the buying process and receive products as usual, unaffected by the affiliate marketing system of which they are an important part.
